Google Play To Pull Plug On Gingerbread Support In Early 2017

Google released Android v2.3 Gingerbread 6  years ago in 2010 and it took almost a year (till December 2011) beforeabout 50% of Android devices ran on Gingerbread.

Lot has happened since then with the likes of Icecream Sandwich, KitKat, Lollipop, Marshmallow and now Nougat being rolled out for Android devices.

In the data released by Google earlier this year, devices running on Android Gingerbread had fallen to an expected
lowly figure of 2.2% and subsequently data has shown that the stat had plummeted further to 1.3%

In light of this, Google has in a blogpost announced its decision to pull the plug on Google Play services support for Gingerbread by early 2017.

Hence, Google Play services v10.0.0 is primed to be the last version offering support for Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with the next scheduled release of the Play service libraries (v10.2.0) will have a minimum supported API level requirement from 9 to 14 (Android 4.0.1, Ice Cream Sandwich).

This development ensures that developers need not worry about pushing out updates for the six year old Gingerbread OS iteration.

I doubt if many people would be disgruntled about this, as the onslaught of Chinese phones has ensured easy availability of superior specs at affordable prices.
